Woolard for Congress!

Atlanta City Council President Cathy Woolard became Georgia's first openly gay candidate for Congress today by announcing her bid for the 4th District seat being vacated by Denise Majette, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
Woolard will face former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in the July 20 Democratic primary and is the first to seize the opening created by Majette's surprising decision Monday to seek higher office, which set off a chain reaction among local politicians considering a run at office.
Woolard touched on several issues important to DeKalb County, whose voters comprise much of the 4th District, such as preserving green space, bringing home more federal funds for transportation, and advocating for affordable health care.

I wonder if McKinney will call Woolard a "good ol' boy," too?

More from Woolard:

"Im running for Congress because America needs to move in a new direction," Woolard said in a press conference on the Courthouse Square in Decatur, the heart of Georgias 4th Congressional District. "We need a leader who unites us, not divides us. We need a leader who will solve problems, not create them, and we need someone who will create consensus, not commotion."
